Instead of auctioning the exquisite items to the public, BKP offered them to its staff at cost price and they snapped them up like hot cakes. That was an astute way of soliciting the participation of its staff in charity work. The collections were later put to a good use to stage a ‘Back to School and Christmas Party’ for 65 children from Agathians Shelter and House of Joy on Dec 9, 2008.

BKP’s Group Managing Director NK Tong said the refreshing idea started with the dismantling of expensive furniture, bedroom sets, fittings and decorative items from the show units of its exclusive condominium Hijauan Kiara which were handed over to the homeowners in early 2008.

“We thought that instead of letting the exquisite home-furnishing items idle at the show units, why not we turn them into something beneficial. That was how the idea of an auction sale came about, where the entire proceeds are donated to charity,” he explained.

During the “Back to School and Christmas Party”, each kid was presented with a set of new uniform, shoes and socks in advance of the new school term in January 2009.

In addition, each child was ‘sponsored’ by individual BKP staff members who went shopping for presents based on the children’s wish list, which were submitted by the administrators of the homes in advance. The wish lists ranged from school bags, watches and stationeries to chess sets.

M. Sivabalan, a council member of Agathians Shelter (Petaling Jaya), said the ”Back to School and Christmas Party” was a reflection of BKP’s thoughtfulness as each child was given what they wished for Christmas as well as a range of back-to-school items.

Stanley, 9 and Kok Hau, 11, from House of Joy (Puchong) said they look forward to wearing their new school uniforms when school reopens next month. ”The care and friendliness shown by BKP always made us look forward to their charity activities,” they said.
