It has been a tradition for the Chinese to spring clean their homes just before the Lunar New Year in order to sweep away bad luck from the preceding year and to welcome good luck when the New Year arrives. When BKP was informed that Rumah Sejahtera Old Folks’ Home needed assistance to spring clean their home, the company immediately sprung into action as part of its ‘Caring Hands’ charity project.

Led by BKP’s Group Managing Director, NK Tong, the ‘Caring Hands’ project was part of the company’s community initiative to reach out to charity homes in need of assistance to revive and refresh the homes. Spending half a day at Rumah Sejahtera recently, BKP employees were seen cleaning the windows, repainting the walls, washing toilets, re-organizing the kitchen and storeroom. Lastly, the Home was decorated with Chinese New Year’s ornaments.

NK said: “At BKP, we believe that the time and effort spent to upkeep charity homes is equally important as monetary donation. That was the reason why we initiated the ‘Caring Hands’ project two years ago,” said NK.

“As Chinese New Year is just around the corner, we hope our little contribution will create and bring some New Year atmosphere to the elderly staying in Rumah Sejahtera. I am also glad that the team has embraced the company’s core value of Caring by giving back to the community in need of help,” added NK.

One of the helpers at the Home by the name of Madam Ying shared that Rumah Sejahtera is always looking forward to have more volunteers clean and tidy the Home. “We are indeed very happy to have BKP to spring clean our Home. Thanks to the newly installed shelves donated by BKP, our kitchen and storeroom are tidier and more organise now. This is definitely one of the best Chinese New Year gifts for the Home,” said Madam Ying.

To cap the memorable event, BKP also organised a lunch and lion dance performance for Rumah Sejahtera. NK later distributed angpows and mandarin oranges to all present.

Thong Sing Foo, the Executive Secretary of Rumah Sejahtera expressed his appreciation to BKP for its thoughtfulness in organising the spring cleaning and throwing in an early Chinese New Year celebration for the residents. “Your company’s visit has been a blessing for the elderly. It is a rare occasion for them to have such a ‘grand’ celebration and to interact so closely with the ‘lions’,” said Thong.
