Who would have thought a simple brunch is good enough to warm the hearts of 18 senior residents of Rumah Charis, an old folks home located in Taman Lucky, Puchong? Bukit Kiara Properties (BKP), a niche property developer in Mont’Kiara recently visited the home, bringing with them the residents’ favourite dishes and spent a quality morning with them.

This visit was a community service event initiated by a group of BKP staff who had taken the cue from the company’s community service responsibility (CSR) programmes. Having spoken to Suzanne Lee and Janette, the coordinators of the home, to find out the favourite dishes of the residents, this group of staff banded together to organize the special brunch on a Saturday morning. There were barbequed meat, yong tau foo, several types of tasty porridge, soya bean milk, cakes and water melon for dessert. It was obvious that the 18 residents were very enthusiastic about the event. They were in high spirits and looked forward to the brunch.

Several BKP staff joined them at the tables to chat with them and to keep them company. Sounds of laughter were heard at every table as the residents shared their jokes. “This is one of the most delicious brunches that I have ever had as we were served with our favourite dishes. It is not often that we get such an experience of being served with our favourite dishes,” said the grateful 65 years old granny Chan. “Though it is just a simple brunch, it is the warmth and thought that you and your colleagues have brought to us,” she added.

This visit is amongst the many visits made by BKP to Rumah Charis thus far. In one of BKP’s visits last year, they brought along cleaning equipment and detergents instead of food. Led by BKP’s Group Managing Director, NK Tong, several BKP staff enthusiastically spruced up the whole compound as well as replaced the water tub and floor tiles at the toilets. “I am proud that my team has embraced the company’s core value of caring by spending their off day with the residents of Rumah Charis. BKP constantly encourages staff to participate in community service activities. It is part of our efforts to give back to the society,” NK shared.

Thumbs up to BKP for the good food!

After brunch, one of the residents sang a popular Cantonese song which was followed by a loud round of applause. Another resident continued the mood by singing a rendition of a Mandarin evergreen after being overwhelmed with encouragement. According to Suzanne Lee, it was unusual to have the seniors belting out songs for visitors. “It must be a very special day for them to sing for the BKP team today. They have treated all of you like their old friends since your team has come to visit them frequently,” said Suzanne.

Towards the end of the event, LK Fan, BKP’s Chief Operating Officer made the occasion even more joyous by distributing ang pau to all the residents. "It is always nice to spend time chatting with these seniors as they have so much to share. I am looking to more of such charity initiatives from the BKP team," said Fan.
